5 Acne Myths it’s Time Clear Up
We all know there are 101 breakout rumours out there, this week we are going to set up straight!
Myth 1 – It’s OK to pop pimples
The Reality – In general, this is a shocking, terrible, no good idea. The trauma caused by popping a pimple can welcome more bacteria and increase inflammation, resulting in a dark mark as it heals. We all know the temptation to squeeze zits when they sprout, however you must resist! The rare occasion of pimple popping yielding good results, is if it has come to a head and is VERY ready to pop. The underlying clogged pores must also not be inflamed, painful, or red for this to occur. However, ask yourself this, “What is more noticeable, a closed bump (that can be camouflaged with makeup), or an oozing and bleeding scab?
Myth 2 - You should lay out in the sun to clear out your blemishes
The Reality – Not so fast! Not only are you putting yourself at risk of developing melanomas, you are also exposing yourself to future wrinkles or pigmentation issues. While it is true that a small amount of sun is good for acne and your skin in general, lying out in the sun for hours is doing more harm than good. We recommend exposing yourself to some rays for maximum 15 – 30 minutes, whilst wearing sunscreen. However, when choosing your sunscreen, be sure that you have chosen one that will not block your pores.
Myth 3 - Exfoliate as much as possible
The Reality – Stop right there. Exfoliation should absolutely be a part of your cleansing routine, but there’s a fine line between exfoliating properly and going overboard. Try to exfoliate two to three times a week or try incorporating Proactiv+ Skin Purifying Mask into your skincare routine. It contains Sulphur (6%) to help clear pores, blemishes and help prevent breakouts. Antioxidant vitamins and botanicals help to soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin. Use the mask as a weekly cleansing ritual or as a rapid response overnight spot treatment to clear any emerging breakouts.
Myth 4 - Pimples happen overnight
The Reality – Acne can actually take around two weeks to reach your skin’s surface. That’s why it’s important to address acne before it starts. Both exfoliation and the use of salicylic acid removes the build-up of dead skin cells on your skin, whilst benzoyl peroxide helps clear acne causing bacteria from the pore. Sulphur helps reduce swelling and redness as well as absorbing excess oil. While this can take time in the beginning, a consistent, daily acne treatment routine like the Proactiv original 3-step system can help break the acne cycle.
Myth 5 - Pores can open and clothes themselves
The Reality – You’ve probably heard that you can steam open your pores with hot water and close them with cold water, but sadly this might be one of the biggest acne misconceptions. Pores are passageways that house hair follicles and sebaceous (oil) glands. They allow sweat to cool you and oil to condition your skin, but do not have a muscle to open and close at will. Pores are a physical trait and thus, mostly determined by your genetics. However, oily pores appear larger and dryer whilst clearer pores appear smaller. You can help to reduce the size of your pores by trying the Proactiv+ Pore Targeting Solution which is the second step of the Proactiv+ 3-Step System. The second step is patented Smart Target™ technology designed to protect the skin’s surface as it delivers the medicine precisely into pores.
